Yamaguchi Takeo: Watercolors sheds light on a lesser known side of the artist Yamaguchi Takeo. Acclaimed for his large-scale abstract oil paintings, Yamaguchi throughout his life worked in other media apart of oil painting and never fully shed representational art. Many works included here aptly illustrate how the painter developed ideas for his abstractions, with concrete subject matter as a starting point. Be this the human figure or motifs taken from nature, by looking at these images one senses the connection. Yet at the same time, Yamaguchi creates a world of its own in these watercolors—a world of bright color and imaginative form that merits appreciation in its own right.
