(1675–1763)

Mid-Edo period priest of the Ōbaku Zen school. Originally from Hizen Province, Yūgai moved to Ryūshinji temple in Saga for his religious training under the priest Dōryū. He later returned to secular life in Kyoto, earning a reputation in the world of sencha under the name Baisaō (lit., tea-selling old man). Being on good terms with artists like Ike no Taiga or Urakami Gyokudō, he is considered a central figure in sencha tea culture. He spent his final years in Okazaki.
