Edo-period painter originally from Owari Province. Gessen studied with Maruyama Ōkyo, but also from Chinese painting of the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and the style of Buson. After becoming the abbot of Jakushōji in Ise, Gessen used his income from painting to restore his temple and help the poor.
