(1899–1968)

Italian painter and sculptor, born in Argentina. Fontana lived in Milan from 1905 to 1922, and again from 1928 onward, when he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. With his first solo exhibition held in 1930 at the Galleria del Milione, Milan, Fontana championed abstract art in Italy and France throughout the 1930s and -40s, also venturing into ceramics. He moved back to Argentina in 1940 but returned to Italy after the war to establish the Academia de Altamira, publishing White Manifesto (Manifesto blanco) in 1946. In 1949, Fontana began working on his Spatial Concept series, monochromatic canvases he would perforate or slash, challenging the notion of two-dimensionality in painting. Fontana is the founder of Spatialism and is known for his close ties to Arte Povera and Art Informel.
