(1887–1980)

Nihonga painter from Kumamoto Prefecture. Nanpū studied with Takahashi Kōko. Admitted to the Bunten exhibitions on the recommendation of Yokoyama Taikan, he won the second prize for his first submission. Under Taikan’s mentorship, Nanpū became a member of the revived Japan Art Institute. With an emphasis on bird-and-flower painting and the subject matter of fish, he eventually became a jury member of the Inten exhibitions and a member of the Japan Art Academy. Nanpū was designated a Person of Cultural Merit and received the Order of Culture.
