(1911–1987)
Painter from Kumamoto Prefecture. Sakamoto studied at the Hongō Institute of Painting and the Teikoku Art School (now Musashino Art University, Tokyo). After a stay in France, he converted to abstraction, centering on abstract works based on impressions of landscape and nature of his home area. His contribution Rentai (Joint) to the Ninth Japan International Exhibition was acquired by the Ministry of Education in 1968. Sakamoto garnered himself a reputation of the “painter of greys” and the “taciturn of the East.” Member of the Independent Art Association and head of the Kumamoto Artists Association. The Sakamoto Zenzō Museum opened in 1995 in his hometown, made possible by a donation by his family of about seventy large oil paintings.
