Painter born in Kobe. Sugaï dropped out of Osaka College of Art to study with Yoshihara Jirō. In 1952, at the age of 33, he moved to France. While in Paris, he developed his characteristic flat painting style, often reminiscent of signboards with an intensely saturated color palette. Sugaï counts among the first Japanese postwar artists to gain international recognition.
