(1876–1948)
Priest of the Jōdo Shinshū school of Buddhism, twenty-second abbot of Nishi Honganji. Kōzui graduated from Gakushūin University and spent extended time traveling India and Europe. A three-time participant of the Ōtani Missions, he collected important documents on the history of Buddhism in China and along the Silk Road. After his retirement, he published the journal Daijō (Mahāyāna), advocating a Buddhist-leaning nationalism in regard to politics, economy and society.
