Painter from Ibaraki Prefecture. While still a student, Ay-O participated in Ei-Q’s Democratic Artists Association. At around the same time, he co-founded the group Jitsuzaisha with Ikeda Masuo and others. Ay-O participated in the exhibitions of the Democratic Artists Association and the Independent Yomiuri Exhibition. In 1958, relocation to the New York City, where he took part in the Fluxus movement. Since the mid-1960s, Ay-O centers on the rainbow motif, building his reputation as the “rainbow artist.” He received the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon and lives in Tokyo and New York.
