(1875–1929)
Nihonga painter, born in Tokyo as the son of the Confucian scholar Kikkawa Tansai. After a brief stint under ukiyoe master Hashimoto Chikanobu (Yōshū Chikanobu), Kikkawa studied from the Kano and Tosa schools, and later with Hashimoto Gahō and yōga painter Koyama Shōtarō. Well-versed in Japanese history, especially the customs of the court and military households, Kikkawa eventually declared himself a follower of Reizei Tamechika’s yamatoe revival. Member of the Kinreisha art association and jury member of the Japan Art Academy Exhibition (Teiten).
