Nihonga painter from Kyoto. Born into a family of yūzen dyers, Kayō first studied painting with Nishimura Goun. At the time of his graduation, he participated in Takeuchi Seihō’s group Chikujōkai. Taking the traditional naturalist stance of Kyoto’s painting circles as a starting point, he infused his approach with a contemporary, intellectual sense. Kayō excelled in bird-and-flower painting and other motifs taken from the animal realm. Nitten jury member and member of the Japan Art Academy. He was named a Person of Cultural Merit and received the Order of Culture.
