Late-Edo period painter from Nagasaki. Sosen initially studied with the Kano painter Yamamoto Joshunsai in Osaka but soon became a member of the circle of Maruyama Ōkyo and their painting style based on close observation of nature. Sosen is of lasting fame for his paintings of wildlife, especially monkeys and deer.
