(1834–1913)
Nihonga painter from Kyoto. Gyokusen followed in the footsteps of his father (also named Gyokusen, with different characters), and was followed by his son, Mochizuki Gyokukei. He participated in the decoration of the reconstructed Imperial Palace in 1855, and with Kōno Bairei and others contributed to the establishment of the Kyoto Prefectural Art School. Apart of his work as a teacher at this school, Gyokusen submitted works to the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900) and various domestic industrial expositions. His fused the style of the Mochizuki school with the Kishi and Shijō schools, establishing a more naturalistic approach. Imperial Court Artist.
