(1885–1976)

Born in Tokyo, Mushanokōji originated from a notable and cultured family within the Japanese aristocracy, with a history of active involvement in cultural and intellectual pursuits. He launched the art and literary magazine Shirakaba with Shiga Naoya and others, and played an active role as one of the representative writers of the Shirakabaha group (White Birch Society). Meanwhile, he also actively practiced the utopian movement of the “Atarashiki Mura” (New Village) from a socialist standpoint. Mushanokōji’s multifaceted contributions extended beyond literature, encompassing cultural exchange, social critique, and the promotion of individualism. These efforts eventually led to his membership in the Japan Art Academy, and he was awarded the Order of Culture.
