(1883–1945)
Born in Kobe, Kansetsu was the eldest son of Confucian scholar Hashimoto Kaikan, a retainer of the Akashi feudal domain. He studied with Takeuchi Seihō and later infused the Shijō style practiced by his teacher with ideas from Japanese literati painting. Kansetsu also wrote calligraphy and poetry. He was appointed a jury member of the Teiten exhibitions, Imperial Court Artist and a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. Kansetsu also received the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur from the French government.
