Avant-garde artist, novelist, and poet; born in Nagano Prefecture in 1929. Kusama’s work since her early days centers on motifs such as polka dots and nets. She moved to the United States in 1957 and lived in New York until 1973. Her avant-garde activities, which pioneered Pop Art and environmental art, influenced later generations. Kusama exhibited widely, including at the Venice Biennale and the Moscow International Art Exhibition, and has received the Special Art Award of the Minister of Culture, the Acknowledgment Award of the Foreign Minister and the Medal of Honor with Dark Blue Ribbon. She was designated a Person of Cultural Merit and received the Order of Culture.
