Ceramist from Nara Prefecture. Tomimoto graduated from the Design Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. While studying in the United Kingdom, he forged a friendship with Bernard Leach. Tomimoto learned about pottery by establishing a kiln in his hometown and visiting existing kilns in various places he traveled to. Technically versatile, Tomimoto worked with white porcelain, blue and white wares and painted decoration, earning a reputation as a master of pattern. Appointed a professor at the Tokyo Fine Arts School and the Kyoto University of Arts, Tomimoto received the Order of Culture and in 1955 was designated Living National Treasure for the preservation of the sometsuke technique.
