(1871–1933)
Nihonga painter from Shiga Prefecture. Initially studying with Nomura Bunkyo of the Shijō school, he later became a member of Mori Kansai’s studio. Thoroughly versed in the style of the Maruyama school, Shunkyo excelled in landscapes and mountain sceneries. Together with Takeuchi Seihō, he is considered one of the great leaders of the Kyoto art scene of his day. Shunkyo led the Sanaekai painting school, and served as a professor at the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting. He was a member of the Japan Art Academy and was appointed as Imperial Household Artist in 1917.
