Late-Edo period painter from Kyoto, Chikkei was the eldest son of the painter Nakabayashi Chikutō. Chikkei studied with his father and later with Yamamoto Baiitsu. Garnering attention for his naturalistic style, Chikkei opened his own studio at the age of 25. Also known for his friendship with Shijō school painter Yoshida Kōkin and literati painter Hineno Taizan.
