(1881–1956)

Poet, calligrapher and art historian, born in Niigata. Aizu graduated from Waseda University. An ardent researcher of Buddhist art of the temples in Nara, he was also attracted to haiku and waka poetry from his early days and wrote poetry in addition to his historical studies. Many of his poems related to early Japanese Buddhism, in a solemn and nuanced style based on the Man’yōshū. Among his publications are the works of poetry New Songs from the Southern Capital and Crying Deer Collection, and the collection of essays, Notes of Konsai. Named a honorary professor of Waseda University and honorary citizen of his hometown Niigata.
