Literati painter of the Edo period. Born in Edo, Chinzan initially worked for the bakufu government and excelled in his military training as well as his intellectual proficiency. After studying painting with Kaneko Kinryō and Watanabe Kazan, Chinzan developed a style based on pliable brushwork and a harmonized, warm palette. He specialized in portraits and bird-and-flower painting. Also active as a haiku poet and sencha tea practitioner.
