(1887–1936)
Nihonga painter from Niigata Prefecture. Bakusen studied under Suzuki Shōnen and Takeuchi Seihō and graduated from the Kyoto City School of Arts. In 1918, he co-founded Kokuga Sōsaku Kyōkai (Association for the Creation of National Painting) with Murakami Kagaku, Ono Chikkyō, and Sakakibara Shihō. After their dissolution, he became an active participant in the Bunten exhibitions. Aiming for a balance between Western painting and a more traditional Japanese style, his works tend to evoke a sense of elegance and gracefulness, making him one of the standard-bearers of modern Nihonga. Member of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy.
