(1895–1984)

Textile artist and painter from Shizuoka Prefecture. Serizawa early on forged a friendship with Yanagi Sōetsu, the leader of the Mingei (folk art) movement and was responsible for the cover art of the group’s journal, Craft (Kōgei). Through his work for the magazine, he learned of traditional dyeing techniques. Serizawa also provided interior and exterior designs for the Japanese Folk Art Museum and the Arts and Crafts Building of the Ohara Art Museum. Member of the Kokuga art association and designated a Person of Cultural Merit. In 1956, he was named a Living National Treasure for the preservation of the katae-zome dyeing technique.
