Philosopher born in Miyagi Prefecture. Umehara served as a professor at Ritsumeikan University and Kyoto City University of the Arts, eventually becoming the president of the latter. In 1987 appointed the first director of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies. His studies encompass a broad field of literature, history and religion, including the history of the Ainu and the Ryūkyū islands. Umehara was designated a Person of Cultural Merit and received the Order of Culture.
