Nihonga painter from Tokyo. Sugiyama studied with Koizumi Katsuji and Matsuoka Eikyū and graduated with honors from the Nihonga course at Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He co-founded the Rusō Gasha art association together with Yamamoto Kyūjin and exhibited regularly at the Teiten and Nitten exhibitions. In the postwar era Sugiyama traveled extensively, especially in Europe and Egypt, and subject matter inspired from these travels would frequently appear in his works. Sugiyama was a member of the Japan Art Academy and received the Order of Culture in 1974.
