(1723–1776)
Literati painter of the mid-Edo period, born in Kyoto. Taiga ran a fan shop in Kyoto and taught himself the fundamentals of Chinese nanshūga (Southern School painting) from imported painting manuals and albums from China, but also studied from the works of early Japanese literati painters Yanagisawa Kien and Gion Nankai. Regarded as an eccentric and free spirit, Taiga was fond of traveling and maintained a large network of personal acquaintances. Due to Taiga and his contemporary Yosa Buson, Japanese literati painting reached its creative apex in the mid-18th century.
