(1718–1804)

Late Edo-period priest of the Shingon school. Born in Osaka, Jiun was a scholar of Sanskrit. He retreated to an eremite life in a place named Two Dragons Hut on Mt. Ikoma near Osaka, where he focused on Sanskrit studies and completed his one-thousand fascicle Bongaku shinryō (Guide to Sanskrit Studies). In his later years, he settled in the temple Kōjiki near Mt. Katsuragi and concentrated on the revival of Shingon vinaya Buddhism and the education of the common people.
