(1903–1975)
Print artist originally from Aomori Prefecture. Shikō first studied Western-style painting as an autodidact and participated in the Teiten exhibitions. Under the influence of Furukawa Ryūsei and Kawakami Sumio, he turned towards woodblock printing. Drawing closer to the circle of the Mingei movement around Yanagi Muneyoshi, Kawai Kanjirō and Hamada Shōji brought about a transformation in his art-making. Many of his works center on religious subject matter. Shikō also experimented with integrating writing into his pictures, blending written text and the visual image into a unique style. Designated a Person of Cultural Merit and receiver of the Order of Culture.
