Confucian scholar of the late Edo period, born in Kyoto. According to some sources, his father Shuntō was the personal physician of Tōfukumon’in, escort of Emperor Go-Mizunoo. Kien established his own method on Confucian studies, kaibutsugaku, which he taught to large numbers of students at his private school Kōdōkan in Kyoto. He studied painting with Mochizuki Gyokusen and later was close to the circle of Maruyama Ōkyo, including Goshun, Genki and Nagasawa Rosetsu.
