Artist of the Momoyama/early Edo period, born in Kyoto. A scion of a family of sword connoisseurs, Kōetsu counts as one of the “Three Master Calligraphers of the Kan’ei Era (1624-1645)” together with Konoe Nobutada and Shōkadō Shōjō. Kōetsu led a life dedicated to the arts and cultural refinement in Takagamine in northwest Kyoto on a parcel of land granted to him by shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. He is known of one of the progenitors of the Rinpa style.
