Philosopher and literary scholar from Ishikawa Prefecture. Nishida graduated from Tokyo University and served as a high school and middle school teacher in various locations. He was eventually appointed a professor of philosophy at Kyoto University. Since the publication of his work An Inquiry into the Good (1911), Nishida was considered of high originality and a leading Japanese philosopher, establishing what became known as “Nishida Philosophy.” He received the Order of Culture in 1940.
