(1905–1997)
Painter born in Hokkaido. Nanbata dropped out from Waseda University to study art at the Taiheiyō art association in Tokyo. Through introduction from Takamura Kōtarō, he was accepted to the Kin’yōkai art association led by Kawashima Riichirō; his painting Kodachi (Trees) was selected for the Fourth Kokuga Exhibition. Nanbata later co-founded the Avantgarde Artist’s Club and the Free Artist’s Association. After the war, he concentrated on abstract painting, with his first retrospective held in 1987 at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He received the Mainichi Art Prize and authored books on abstract art and poetry.
