(1867–1916)
Novelist, born in Tokyo. Sōseki initially worked as a schoolteacher. After studying in the United Kingdom, he became a lecturer at the First Higher School and Tokyo Imperial University. At the recommendation of Takahama Kyoshi, Sōseki began to write in a naturalist mode. His first major work, I Am a Cat, was followed by a number of successful publications, including Sanshirō, And Then, The Gate, Kokoro and his final unfinished novel Light and Darkness. In his lifetime, Sōseki wrote over three thousand haiku and painted many works in the literati style. His works deal with a vast range of topics, assuring him an enduring place in world literature.
