(1827–1913)
Calligrapher from Hizen Province. Gochiku was at first employed with the lord of Nabeshima, then moved to Edo and studied calligraphy with Ichikawa Beian and Yamauchi Kōsetsu. During his travels to China he studied with Pan Cun and produced many rubbings of stone inscriptions of the Han, Wei and Six Dynasties. His skill encompassed all major style including seal script, standard, cursive and semi-cursive scripts, boasting a vibrant yet delicate brushwork. Author of Stories of Gochiku’s Studio.
